The Bird's Bargain Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCA DEFE GHGH IJIJ KLKL MNMN

'O spare my cherries in the net 'A
Brother Benignus prayed 'and IB
Summer and winter shine and wetC
Will pile the blackbirds' table high 'A
-
'O spare my youngling peas ' he prayedD
'That for the Abbot's table beE
And every blackbird shall be fedF
Yea they shall have their fill ' said heE
-
His prayer his vow the blackbirds heardG
And spared his shining garden plotH
In abstinence went every birdG
All the old thieving ways forgotH
-
He kept his promise to his friendsI
And daily set them finest fareJ
Of corn and meal and manchet endsI
With marrowy bones for winter bareJ
-
Brother Benignus died in graceK
The brethren keep his trust and feedL
The blackbirds in this pleasant placeK
Purged as dear heaven from strife and greedL
-
The blackbirds sing the whole year longM
Here where they keep their promise givenN
And do the mellowing fruit no wrongM
Brother Benignus smiles in heavenN
