The starling in the ivy nowA
For to amuse his dearB
Mimics the dog the cat the cowA
Blackbird and ChanticleerB
-
The starling's an accomplished mimeC
Between his love makingD
He solaces her brooding timeC
By many a madcap thingD
-
He is the saw the spade the scytheE
He rings the dinner bellF
Chuckles of laughter small and blitheG
Of self laudations tellF
-
Now by the battle field he mocksH
As though 'twere but a gameI
Thunder with which the belfry rocksH
And the great bursts of flameI
-
Till when the merriment will pallJ
He turns to love againK
Calling his love sick gurgling callL
Above the dying menK
-
Who knows what dream the starling weavesM
Of boyhood soft and cleanN
A small room under golden eavesM
To which the sun looks inO
-
The starling's talking in the thatchP
Bidding the boy ariseQ
And the door's opening on the latchP
To show his mother's eyesQ
