Little sisters the birdsA
We must praise God you and IB
You with songs that fill the skyB
I with halting wordsA
-
All things tell His praiseC
Woods and waters thereof singD
Summer Winter Autumn SpringD
And the night and daysC
-
Yea and cold and heatE
And the sun and stars and moonF
Sea with her monotonous tuneF
Rain and hail and sleetE
-
And the winds of heavenG
And the solemn hills of blueH
And the brown earth and the dewH
And the thunder evenI
-
And the flowers' sweet breathJ
All things make one glorious voiceK
Life with fleeting pains and joysL
And our brother DeathJ
-
Little flowers of airM
With your feathers soft and sleekN
And your bright brown eyes and meekN
He hath made you fairM
-
He hath taught to youH
Skill to weave in tree and thatchO
Nests where happy mothers hatchO
Speckled eggs of blueH
-
And hath children givenG
When the soft heads overbrimP
The brown nests then thank ye HimP
In the clouds of heavenG
-
Also in your livesQ
Live His laws Who loveth youH
Husbands be ye kind and trueH
Be home keeping wivesR
-
Love not gossipingD
Stay at home and keep the nestS
Fly not here and there in questS
Of the newest thingD
-
Live as brethren liveT
Love be in each heart and mouthU
Be not envious be not wrothU
Be not slow to giveV
-
When ye build the nestS
Quarrel not o'er straw or woolW
He who hath be bountifulX
To the neediestY
-
Be not puffed nor vainZ
Of your beauty or your worthU
Of your children or your birthU
Or the praise ye gainZ
-
Eat not greedilyA2
Sometimes for sweet mercy's sakeB2
Worm or insect spare to takeB2
Let it crawl or flyB
-
See ye sing not nearC2
To our church on holy dayD2
Lest the human folk should strayD2
From their prayers to hearE2
-
Now depart in peaceF2
In God's name I bless each oneG
May your days be long i' the sunG
And your joys increaseF2
-
And remember meA2
Your poor brother Francis whoH
Loves you and gives thanks to youH
For this courtesyA2
-
Sometimes when ye singD
Name my name that He may takeB2
Pity for the dear song's sakeB2
On my shortcomingD
