O the red rose may be fairA
And the lily statelierA
But my shamrock one in threeA
Takes the very heart of meA
-
Many a lover hath the roseB
When june's musk wind breathes and blowsB
And in many a bower is heardC
Her sweet praise from bee and birdC
-
Through the gold hours dreameth sheA
In her warm heart passionatelyA
Her fair face hung languid wiseD
O her breath of honey and spiceE
-
Like a fair saint virginalF
Stands your lily silver and tallG
Over all the flowers that beA
Is my shamrock dear to meA
-
Shines the lily like the sunH
Crystal pure a cold sweet nunH
With her austere lip she singsI
To her heart of heavenly thingsI
-
Gazeth through a night of JuneJ
To her sister saint the moonJ
With the stars communeth longK
Of the angels and their songK
-
But when summer died last yearA
Rose and lily died with herA
Shamrock stayeth every dayL
Be the winds or gold or greyL
-
Irish hills as grey as the doveM
Know the little plant I loveM
Warm and fair it mantles themN
Stretching down from throat to hemN
-
And it laughs o'er many a valeO
Sheltered safe from storm and galeO
Sky and sun and stars thereofM
Love the gentle plant I loveM
-
Soft it clothes the ruined floorA
Of many an abbey grey and hoarA
And the still home of the deadP
With its green is carpetedQ
-
Roses for an hour of loveM
With the joy and pain thereofM
Stand my lilies white to seeA
All for prayer and purityA
-
These are white as the harvest moonJ
Roses flush like the heart of JuneJ
But my shamrock brave and gayL
Glads the tired eyes every dayL
-
O the red rose shineth rareA
And the lily saintly fairA
But my shamrock one in threeA
Takes the inmost heart of meA
