Our father ere he wentA
Out with his brother DeathB
Smiling and well contentA
As a bridegroom goethB
Sweetly forgiveness prayedC
From man or beast whom heD
Had ever injuredE
Or burdened needlesslyD
-
'Verily ' then said heD
'I crave before I passF
Forgiveness full and freeD
Of my little brother the assF
Many a time and oftG
When winds and ways were hotH
He hath borne me cool and softI
And service grudged me notH
-
'And once did it betideJ
There was unseen of meD
A gall upon his sideJ
That suffered grievouslyD
And once his manger wasK
Empty and bare and brownL
Praise God for sweet dry grassF
That Bethlehem folk shook downL
-
'Consider brethren ' said heD
'Our little brother how mildM
How patient he will beD
Though men are fierce and wildM
His coat is gray and fineN
His eyes are kind with loveO
This little brother of mineN
Is gentle as the doveO
-
'Consider how such an oneP
Beheld our Saviour bornQ
And carried him full grownR
Through Eastern streets one mornQ
For this the Cross is laidC
Upon him for a signN
Greatly is honour dD
This little brother of mine '-
-
And even while he spakeS
Down in his stable stallT
His little ass 'gan shakeS
And turned its face to the wallT
Down fell the heavy tearU
Its gaze so mournful wasK
Fra Leo standing nearV
Pitied the little assF
-
That night our father diedJ
All night the kine did lowW
The ass went heavy eyedJ
With patient tears and slowW
The very birds on wingsX
Made mournful cries in the airU
Amen all living thingsX
Our father's brethern wereY
