As up and down I fare by road and streetB
The mothers of our men at arms I meetB
Who die for mine and meC
That we go safe and freeC
Sit in the sun sleep soft and find life sweetB
-
I have two sons too young to fight too youngD
God grant if my hour comes I may be strongE
And caught in such a straitF
May praise God and be greatF
Giving my sons to save some woman from wrongE
Oh mothers of dead heroes ye I knowG
My heart sends you a greeting soft and lowG
Blessed are ye whose sonsH
Amid the ransomed onesH
Throng to the banners of Heaven as white as snowG
-
Somehow by some secret and certain signI
The mothers of the beloved I divineI
Who died in my sons' placeJ
My heart kneels and gives graceJ
Gives thanks for you for you proud sisters of mineI
