Joining The Colours Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GHGH

THERE they go marching all in step so gayA
Smooth cheeked and golden food for shells and gunsB
Blithely they go as to a wedding dayA
The mothers' sonsB
-
The drab street stares to see them row on rowC
On the high tram tops singing like the larkD
Too careless gay for courage singing they goC
Into the darkD
-
With tin whistles mouth organs any noiseE
They pipe the way to glory and the graveF
Foolish and young the gay and golden boysE
Love cannot saveF
-
High heart High courage The poor girls they kissedG
Run with them they shall kiss no more alasH
Out of the mist they stepped into the mistG
Singing they passH
