I In South AfricaA
-
Over the lonesome African plainB
The stars look down like eyes of the slainB
-
A bumping ride across gullies and rutsC
Now a grumble and now a jestD
A bit of profanity jolted outE
WhistE
Into a hornet's nestE
Curse on the scoutE
Long bearded Boers rising out of the rocksF
Rocks that already are crimson splashedE
Ping ping of bullets stabbings and cutsC
As if hell hurtled and hissedE
Then muffling the shocksF
A sting in the breastE
A mistE
A woman's face down the darkness flashedE
RestE
-
All as before save for still forms spreadE
Under the boulders dripping redE
-
Over the lonesome African plainB
The stars look down like eyes of the slainB
-

II In the PhilippinesG
-
Silvery rice fields whisper wideE
How for home and freedom their owners diedE
-
We've set the torch to their bamboo townH
And out they come in a scampering rushI
Little brown men with spearsJ
ShootE
Down they go in a crushI
Sickening smearsJ
Hideous writhing huddles and heapsK
Under the palms and the mango treesL
More still more Shoot 'em downH
Like brown jack rabbits that scootE
With comical leapsK
Out of the brushI
No lootE
No prisoners then As for theseL
HushI
-
The flag that dreamed of deliveringM
Shudders and droops like a broken wingM
-
Silvery rice felds whisper wideE
How for home and freedom their owners diedE
