No matter we are only mulesB
And slow to understandC
We drown according to the rulesB
Of war we contrabandC
War reckons us as shot and shellD
As so much metal lostE
And mourns the dollars gone to swellD
The monstrous bill of costF
Would that we had been wrought of steelG
And not of quivering fleshH
Of iron not of nerves that feelG
And maddened limbs that threshH
The sucking seas in stubborn strifeI
For that dim right of oursJ
To what no factory fashions lifeI
No Edison endowersJ
Our last wild screams are choked you knowK
It does not matter forL
We're only mules that suffered soK
And contraband of warL
