Of hemlock and pungent pine | B |
All the whispering woodland tones | A |
Gossip of things divine | B |
Why God is gray in the granite rock | C |
And green in the lichen flake | D |
And swift in the darting swallow flock | C |
And slow in the lapping lake | D |
Why God is sweet in the hermit thrush | E |
And hoarse in the frog and why | F |
His touch on the bee is golden plush | E |
And gauze on the stinging fly | F |
Why God is life in the mushroom there | G |
And death in the toadstool here | H |
Mirth in the dancing maidenhair | H |
In its hidden adder fear | H |
Oh if this berry that stains my lip | I |
Could teach me the woodland chat | J |
Science would bow to my scholarship | I |
And Theology doff the hat | J |
