Blood Road Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GHGI JKJK LMLM ANAN

The Old Year groaned as he trudged awayA
His guilty shadow black on the snowB
And the heart of the glad New Year turned greyA
At the road Time bade him goB
-
O Gaffer Time is it blood road stillC
Is the noontide dark as the stormy mornD
Is man's will yet as a wild beast's willC
When shall the Christ be bornD
-
He laughed as he answered grim Gaffer TimeE
Whose laugh is sadder than all men's moanF
That name rides high on our wrath and crimeE
For the Light in darkness shoneF
-
And thou fair youngling wilt mend the taleG
The New Year stared on the misty wordH
Where at foot of a cross all lustrous paleG
Men raged for their gods of goldI
-
Come back Old Year with thy burden bentJ
Come back and settle thine own dark debtK
Nay let me haste where the years repentJ
For I've seen what I would forgetK
-
And I the first of a stately trainL
The tramp of a century heard behindM
Must I be fouled with thy murder stainL
Is there no pure path to findM
-
The Old Year sneered as he limped awayA
To the place of his penance dim and farN
The New Year stood in the gates of dayA
Crowned with the morning starN
