Whitsuntide. Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCB DEDF GHGH IJIJ KLKL MNOP QGQR

Come down come down O Holy GhostA
As once of old Thou didst come downB
In fiery tongues at PentecostC
The Apostolic heads to crownB
-
Come down though now no flame divineD
Nor heaven sent Dove our sight amazeE
Our Church still shows the outward signD
Thou truly givest inward graceF
-
Come down come down on infancyG
The babes whom Jesus deign'd to loveH
God give us grace by faith to seeG
Above the Font the mystic DoveH
-
Come down come down on kneeling bandsI
Of those who fain would strength receiveJ
And in the laying on of handsI
Bless us beyond what we believeJ
-
Come down not only on the saintK
Oh struggle with the hard of heartL
With wilful sin and inborn taintK
Till lust and wrath and pride departL
-
Come down come down sweet ComforterM
It was the promise of the LordN
Come down although we grieve Thee soreO
Not for our merits but His WordP
-
Come down come down not what we wouldQ
But what we need O bring with TheeG
Turn life's sore riddle to our goodQ
A little while and we shall see AmenR
