We meant to be very kindA
But if ever we findA
Another soft grey green moss coated feather lined nest in a hedgeB
We have taken a pledgeB
Susan Jemmy and I with remorseful tears at this very minuteC
That if there are eggs or little birds in itD
Robin or wren thrush chaffinch or linnetD
We'll leave them thereE
To their mother's careE
There were three of us Kate and Susan and JemF
And three of themF
I don't know their names for they couldn't speakG
Except with a little imperative squeakG
Exactly like PollH
Susan's squeaking dollI
But squeaking dolls will lie on the shelvesJ
For years and never squeak of themselvesJ
The reason we like little birds so much better than toysK
Is because they are really alive and know how to make a noiseK
-
There were three of us and three of themF
Kate that is I and Susan and JemF
Our mother was busy making a pieL
And theirs we think was up in the skyL
But for all Susan Jemmy or I can tellM
She may have been getting their dinner as wellM
They were left to themselves and so were weN
In a nest in the hedge by the willow treeN
And when we caught sight of three red little fluff tufted hazel eyedO
open mouthed pink throated heads we all shouted for gleeN
-
The way we really did wrong was thisP
We took them for Mother to kissP
And she told us to put them backQ
Whilst out on the weeping willow their mother was crying AlackQ
We really heardR
Both what Mother told us to do and the voice of the mother birdR
But we three that is Susan and I and JemF
Thought we knew better than either of themF
And in spite of our mother's command and the poor bird's cryL
We determined to bring up her three little nestlings ourselves on the slyL
-
We each took oneS
It did seem such excellent funS
Susan fed hers on milk and breadT
Jem got wriggling worms for his insteadT
I gave mine meatU
For you know I thought Poor darling pet why shouldn't it have roast beef to eatU
But oh dear oh dear oh dear how we criedO
When in spite of milk and bread and worms and roast beef the little birds diedO
It's a terrible thing to have heart acheV
I thought mine would breakV
As I heard the mother bird's moanW
And looked at the grey green moss coated feather lined nest she had taken such pains to makeV
And her three little children dead and as cold as stoneW
Mother said and it's sadly trueX
There are some wrong things one can never undoX
And nothing that we could do or sayY
Would bring life back to the birds that dayY
-
The bitterest tears that we could weepZ
Wouldn't wake them out of their stiff cold sleep But thenA2
We Susan and Jem and I mean never to be so selfish and wilful and cruel againA2
And we three have buried those other threeN
In a soft green moss covered flower lined grave at the foot of the willow treeN
And all the leaves which its branches shedT
We think are tears because they are deadT
