I-

Dear children listen whilst I tellB
What to a certain Elf befellB
Who left his house and sallied forthC
Adventure seeking south and northC
And west and east by path and fieldD
Resolved to conquer or to yieldD
A thimble on his back he carriedE
With a rose twig his foes he parriedE
-

II-
-
It was a sunny bright spring dayF
When to the wood he took his wayF
He knew that in a certain spotG
A Bumble Bee his nest had gotG
The Bee was out the chance was goodH
But just when grabbing all he couldH
He heard the Bee behind him hummingA
And only wished he'd heard him comingA
-
-
III-
-
In terror turned the tiny manI
And now a famous fight beganI
The Bee flew round and buzzed and stungJ
The Elf his prickly rose staff swungJ
Now fiercely here now wildly thereK
He hit the Bee or fought the airK
At last one weighty blow descendedL
The Bee was dead the fight was endedL

Exhausted quite he took a seatN
The honey tasted doubly sweetN
The thimble full had been upsetO
But still there were a few drops yetO
He licked his lips and blessed himselfM
That he was such a lucky ElfM
And now might hope to live in cloverP
But ah his troubles were not overP

VM
-
For at that instant by his sideQ
A beast of fearful form he spiedQ
At first he thought it was a bearK
And headlong fell in dire despairK
He lost one slipper in the mossR
And this was not his only lossR
With paws and snout the beast was nimbleS
And very soon cleared out the thimbleS

VIM
-
This rifling of his honey potG
Awoke our Elfin's wrath full hotG
He made a rope of linden bastT
By either end he held it fastT
And creeping up behind the beastU
Intent upon the honey feastU
Before it had the slightest inklingA
The rope was round it in a twinklingA

VIIM
-
The mouse shrieked Murder Fire and ThievesV
And struggled through the twigs and leavesV
It pulled the reins with all its mightW
Our hero only drew them tightW
Upon the mouse's back he leaptX
And like a man his seat he keptX
His steed was terribly affrightedX
But he himself was much delightedX
-
-
VIIIM
-
Gee up my little horse he criedX
I mean to have a glorious rideX
So bear me forth with lightning speedX
A Knight resolved on doughty deedX
The wide world we will gallop roundX
And clear the hedges at one boundX
The mouse set off the hero banteredX
And out into the world they canteredX
-

IXV
-
At last they rode up to an innY
Good Mr Host pray who's withinY
My daughter serves the customersV
Before the fire the Tom cat purrsV
For further news they did not waitX
The mouse sprang through the garden gateX
They fled without a look behind themZ
The question is Did Thomas find themZ
