For KentonA
-
-
An iron hand has stilled the throatsB
That throbbed with loud and rhythmic gleeC
And dammed the flood of silver notesB
That drenched the world in melodyC
The blosmy apple boughs are yearningD
For their wild choristers' returningD
But no swift wings flash through the treeC
-
Ye that were glad and fleet and strongE
Shall Silence take you in her netF
And shall Death quell that radiant songE
Whose echo thrills the meadow yetF
Burst the frail web about you clingingD
And charm Death's cruel heart with singingD
Till with strange tears his eyes are wetF
-
The scented morning of the yearG
Is old and stale now ye are goneH
No friendly songs the children hearI
Among the bushes on the lawnH
When babies wander out a MayingD
Will ye their bards afar be strayingD
Unhymned by you what is the dawnH
-
Nay since ye loved ye cannot dieJ
Above the stars is set your nestK
Through Heaven's fields ye sing and flyJ
And in the trees of Heaven restK
And little children in their dreamingD
Shall see your soft black plumage gleamingD
And smile by your clear music blestK
