For Thomas WalshA
-
-
I-
-
On nights like this the huddled sheepB
Are like white clouds upon the grassC
And merry herdsmen guard their sleepB
And chat and watch the big stars passC
-
It is a pleasant thing to lie-
Upon the meadow on the hillD
With kindly fellowship near by-
Of sheep and men of gentle willD
-
I lean upon my broken crookE
And dream of sheep and grass and menF
O shameful eyes that cannot lookE
On any honest thing againF
-
On bloody feet I clambered downG
And fled the wages of my sinH
I am the leavings of the townG
And meanly serve its meanest innH
-
I tramp the courtyard stones in griefI
While sleep takes man and beast to herJ
And every cloud is calling ThiefI
And every star calls MurdererJ
-
II-
-
The hand of God is sure and strongK
Nor shall a man forever fleeL
The bitter punishment of wrongK
The wrath of God is over meL
-
With ashen bread and wine of tearsM
Shall I be solaced in my painN
I wear through black and endless yearsO
Upon my brow the mark of CainN
-
III-
-
Poor vagabond so old and mildP
Will they not keep him for a nightQ
And She a woman great with childP
So frail and pitiful and whiteQ
-
Good people since the tavern doorR
Is shut to you come here insteadS
See I have cleansed my stable floorR
And piled fresh hay to make a bedS
-
Here is some milk and oaten cakeT
Lie down and sleep and rest you fairU
Nor fear O simple folk to takeT
The bounty of a child of careU
-
IVI
-
On nights like this the huddled sheepB
I never saw a night so fairU
How huge the sky is and how deepB
And how the planets flash and glareU
-
At dawn beside my drowsy flockV
What winged music I have heardW
But now the clouds with singing rockV
As if the sky were turning birdW
-
O blinding Light O blinding LightQ
Burn through my heart with sweetest painN
O flaming Song most loudly brightQ
Consume away my deadly stainN
-
VI
-
The stable glows against the sky-
And who are these that throng the wayX
My three old comrades hasten by-
And shining angels kneel and prayX
-
The door swings wide I cannot goY
I must and yet I dare not seeI
Lord who am I that I should knowY
Lord God be merciful to meI
-
VI-
-
O Whiteness whiter than the fleeceZ
Of new washed sheep on April sodA2
O Breath of Life O Prince of PeaceZ
O Lamb of God O Lamb of GodA2
