Rhyme Scheme: A BCDCEFGF HIDIJKLK MNONBGPG QRSRTUHU BCDCEFGF

Patron of BeggarsA
-
-
We who beg for bread as we daily treadB
Country lane and city streetC
Let us kneel and pray on the broad highwayD
To the saint with the vagrant feetC
Our altar light is a buttercup brightE
And our shrine is a bank of sodF
But still we share St Alexis' careG
The Vagabond of GodF
-
They gave him a home in purple RomeH
And a princess for his brideI
But he rowed away on his wedding dayD
Down the Tiber's rushing tideI
And he came to land on the Asian strandJ
Where the heathen people dwellK
As a beggar he strayed and he preached and prayedL
And he saved their souls from hellK
-
Bowed with years and pain he came back againM
To his father's dwelling placeN
There was none to see who this tramp might beO
For they knew not his bearded faceN
But his father said Give him drink and breadB
And a couch underneath the stairG
So Alexis crept to his hole and sleptP
But he might not linger thereG
-
For when night came down on the seven hilled townQ
And the emperor hurried inR
Saying Lo I hear that a saint is nearS
Who will cleanse us of our sinR
Then they looked in vain where the saint had lainT
For his soul had fled afarU
From his fleshly home he had gone to roamH
Where the gold paved highways areU
-
We who beg for bread as we daily treadB
Country lane and city streetC
Let us kneel and pray on the broad highwayD
To the saint with the vagrant feetC
Our altar light is a buttercup brightE
And our shrine is a bank of sodF
But still we share St Alexis' careG
The Vagabond of GodF
