St. Alexis, Patron Of Beggars Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDEFE GHCHIJKJ LMNMAFOF PQRQSTGT ABCBDEFE

We who beg for bread as we daily treadA
Country lane and city streetB
Let us kneel and pray on the broad highwayC
To the saint with the vagrant feetB
Our altar light is a buttercup brightD
And our shrine is a bank of sodE
But still we share St Alexis' careF
The Vagabond of GodE
-
They gave him a home in purple RomeG
And a princess for his brideH
But he rowed away on his wedding dayC
Down the Tiber's rushing tideH
And he came to land on the Asian strandI
Where the heathen people dwellJ
As a beggar he strayed and he preached and prayedK
And he saved their souls from hellJ
-
Bowed with years and pain he came back againL
To his father's dwelling placeM
There was none to see who this tramp might beN
For they knew not his bearded faceM
But his father said Give him drink and breadA
And a couch underneath the stairF
So Alexis crept to his hole and sleptO
But he might not linger thereF
-
For when night came down on the seven hilled townP
And the emperor hurried inQ
Saying Lo I hear that a saint is nearR
Who will cleanse us of our sinQ
Then they looked in vain where the saint had lainS
For his soul had fled afarT
From his fleshly home he had gone to roamG
Where the gold paved highways areT
-
We who beg for bread as we daily treadA
Country lane and city streetB
Let us kneel and pray on the broad highwayC
To the saint with the vagrant feetB
Our altar light is a buttercup brightD
And our shrine is a bank of sodE
But still we share St Alexis' careF
The Vagabond of GodE
