Martin Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD EFEFCGCG HCHCIJIJ KCKCCCCC CLCLMNMN

When I am tired of earnest menA
Intense and keen and sharp and cleverB
Pursuing fame with brush or penA
Or counting metal disks foreverB
Then from the halls of ShadowlandC
Beyond the trackless purple seaD
Old Martin's ghost comes back to standC
Beside my desk and talk to meD
-
Still on his delicate pale faceE
A quizzical thin smile is showingF
His cheeks are wrinkled like fine laceE
His kind blue eyes are gay and glowingF
He wears a brilliant hued cravatC
A suit to match his soft grey hairG
A rakish stick a knowing hatC
A manner blithe and debonairG
-
How good that he who always knewH
That being lovely was a dutyC
Should have gold halls to wander throughH
And should himself inhabit beautyC
How like his old unselfish wayI
To leave those halls of splendid mirthJ
And comfort those condemned to stayI
Upon the dull and sombre earthJ
-
Some people ask What cruel chanceK
Made Martin's life so sad a storyC
Martin Why he exhaled romanceK
And wore an overcoat of gloryC
A fleck of sunlight in the streetC
A horse a book a girl who smiledC
Such visions made each moment sweetC
For this receptive ancient childC
-
Because it was old Martin's lotC
To be not make a decorationL
Shall we then scorn him having notC
His genius of appreciationL
Rich joy and love he got and gaveM
His heart was merry as his dressN
Pile laurel wreaths upon his graveM
Who did not gain but was successN
