The Soul's Hereafter Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDED FGFH CIEJ AKLK KKKK MNMN KOKO

DIES not the soul when dust to dust is givenA
Even as we are in earth life are we stillB
Save from the worn out garment rent and rivenA
That may have proved a fetter to the willB
-
Not unto demons void of good convertedC
Not unto angels void of error noD
But human spirited and human heartedE
We on our way with pain or pleasure goD
-
Not reft of feeling nay with feelings keenerF
To others' woes more keen to others' joysG
With bosoms purer and with minds serenerF
Though human still more humane we and wiseH
-
Not more to be despised nor veneratedC
For aught from change of state acquired or caughtI
But at our inner value estimatedE
Shall we be shunned or courted as we oughtJ
-
Not to their fabled hell nor fabled heavenA
By the good Father's will are we consignedK
But to a sphere of human action evenL
To one adapted to each frame and mindK
-
Not one sweet feeling passeth unrewardedK
Not one black deed can go unpunished notK
Not one swift thought can vanish unrecordedK
And give no colour to our future lotK
-
Not words but thoughts and not on faith but actionsM
And on whatever gives our acts their hueN
The heart's allurements and the mind's distractionsM
Is based the verdict we shall prize or rueN
-
Yes such the future that awaits the spiritK
Then let us pause and think while pause we canO
How best we may the meed eternal meritK
That shall be to the weal eterne of manO
