THE bitter wind blows o'er the desolate woldA
The bloom from the blossom forever is spedB
And I must trudge on thro' the sleet and the coldA
And sweet to my heart were the lot of the deadB
-
Upon my shrunk bosom sleep seizeth my childC
The bloom from the blossom forever is spedB
Awaken my darling Alas I'm beguiledC
And would I too slept the sound sleep of the deadB
-
Cold cold are its feet and its bosom and ohD
The bloom from the blossom forever is spedB
No more will the bird prove a light to my woeD
And would I too slept the sound sleep of the deadB
-
Its sweet glossy eyes seem to look at men yetE
The bloom from the blossom forever is spedB
They mind me of others I fain would forgetE
And would I too slept the sound sleep of the deadB
-
Its soft silken locks e'er as sunny as softF
The bloom from the blossom forever is spedB
A wet are the curies I've kissed so oftG
And would I too slept the sound sleep of the deadB
-
The wee tottie crept atween me and my toilH
The bloom from the blossom forever is spedB
But then its bit smile had the trick of his smileI
And would that I slept the sound sleep of the deadB
-
No father had I once to threaten or frownJ
The bloom from the blossom forever is spedB
And mother kept silent till reason had flownK
Then dropt she to sleep the sound sleep of the deadB
-
I've reached the old ruin endeared by the pastL
The bloom from the blossom forever is spedB
He'll come here and find our bones whiten'd at lastL
And lie down and rest by the dust of the deadB
