d shedA
It sped over mountains and valleysB
And withered the earth as it spedA
Like a blast in its fell consummationC
Of all that we holy should holdD
Thrilled thrilled thro' the nerves of theE
nationC
A cry for the reign of King GoldD
-
Upstarted the chiefs of the cityF
And sending it back with a ringG
To the air of a popular dittyF
Erected a throne to the kingG
'Twas based upon fiendish persuasionsH
Cemented by crimes manifoldD
Embellished by specious ovationsH
That dazzled the foes of King GoldD
-
The prey of unruly emotionC
The miner and diver go forthI
And the depths of the earth and the oceanC
Are shorn of their lustre and worthJ
The mountain is riven asunderK
The days of the valley are toldD
And sinew and glory and grandeurL
Are sapped for a smile of King GoldD
-
Beguiled of their native demeanourL
The high rush with heirlooms and baysM
The poor with what gold cannot weigh norL
The skill of the pedant appraiseM
The soldier he spurs with his dutyF
And lo by the frenzy made boldD
The damsel she glides with her beautyF
To garnish the brow of King GoldD
-
Accustomed to traffic forbiddenC
By honour by heaven each hourL
The purest by conscience unchiddenC
Laugh laugh at the noble and pureL
And Chastity rein's in a halterL
Is led to the temple and soldD
Devotion herself at the altarL
Yields homage alone to King GoldD
-
Affection on whose honey blossomN
The child of affliction still fedA
Affection is plucked from the bosomN
And malice implanted insteadA
And dark grow the brows of the tenderL
And colder the hearts of the coldD
Love pity and justice surrenderL
Their charge to the hounds of King GoldD
-
See see from the sear'd earth ascendingG
A cloud o'er the welkin expandsO
See see 'mid the dense vapour bendingG
Pale women with uplifted handsO
Smokes thus to the bridegroom of CirceO
The dear blood of hundreds untoldD
Invokes thus the angel of mercyO
A curse on the reign of King GoldD
-
It sounded in castle and palaceO
It sounded in cottage and shedA
It sped over mountains and alleysO
And withered the earth as it spedA
Like a blast in its fell consummationC
Of all that we holy should holdD
Thrilled thrilled thro' the nerves of theE
nationC
'Cling clang for the reign of King Gold '-
