MY lad he is a Collier LadA
And ere the lark awakesB
He's up and away to spend the dayC
Where daylight never breaksB
But when at last the day has pass'dD
Clean washed and cleanly cladA
He courts his Nell who loveth wellE
Her handsome Collier LadA
-
Chorus There's not his match in smoky ShieldsB
Newcastle never hadA
A lad more tight nor trim nor brightF
Than is my Collier LadA
-
Tho' doomed to labour under groundG
A merry lad is heH
And when a holiday comes roundG
He'll spend that day in gleeH
He'll tell his tale o'er a pint of aleI
And crack his joke and badA
Must be the heart who loveth notJ
To hear the Collier LadA
-
Chorus There's not his match etcK
-
At bowling matches on the greenL
He ever takes the leadM
For none can swing his arm and flingN
With such a pith and speedO
His bowl is seen to skim the greenL
And bound as if right gladA
To hear the cry of victoryH
Salute the Collier LadA
-
Chorus There's not his match etcK
-
When 'gainst the wall they play the ballP
He's never known to lagQ
But up and down he gars it bowneR
Till all his rivals fagQ
When deftly lo he strikes a blowS
Which gars them all look sadA
And wonder how it came to passB
They play'd the Collier LadA
-
Chorus There's not his match etcK
-
The quoits are out the hobs are fix'dT
The first round quoit he flingsB
Enrings the hob and lo the nextU
The hob again unringsB
And thus he'll play a summer dayC
The theme of those who gadA
And youngsters shrink to bet their brassB
Against the Collier LadA
-
Chorus There's not his match etcK
-
When in the dance he doth advanceB
The rest all sigh to seeB
How he can spring and kick his heelsB
When they a wearied beB
Your one two three with either kneeB
He'll beat and then glee madA
A heel o'er head leap crowns the danceB
Danced by the Collier LadA
-
Chorus There's not his match etcK
-
Besides a will and pith and skillV
My laddie owns a heartW
That never once would suffer himX
To act a cruel partW
That to the poor would ope the doorY
To share the last he hadA
And many a secret blessing's pour'dZ
Upon my Collier LadA
-
Chorus There's not his match etcK
-
He seldom goes to church I ownR
And when he does why thenA2
He with a leer will sit and hearB2
And doubt the holy menA2
This very much annoys my heartW
But soon as we are wedM
To please the priest I'll do my bestC2
To tame my Collier LadA
-
Chorus There's not his match etcK
