WRAPT in fancy by a riverA
That flows onward ever everA
Down I sat me while the moonB
In her fairest vesture shoneC
All was still as death when loD
Down the solemn tide did flowD
Fay's that once with pleasure thrill'd meE
Fiends that once with horror chill'd meE
Social Glee and sullen CareF
Lofty Courage crouching FearG
And ah who with dire DespairF
She on whom my heart has hungH
She who oft my heart has strungH
While the heavy footed yearsI
Sought to bury her in caresJ
'One by one and two by twoK
They the graceful they the trueK
Went my idols long agoD
And must thou desert me now 'L
Thus I frantically criedM
When a look was cast behindN
Clung shall cling unto my mindN
And a hollow voice repliedM
'All things go the way we're goingO
From thy quest refrainP
All all that be the Earth the SeaE
Yon Moon above the Stars that moveQ
In concord o'er yon crystal plainP
Yea all to one vast gulph are flowingO
And thy cry's in vain 'L
-
Heard I aright what is my cryR
A cry in vain what means replyR
So dark as this Can earth and skyR
Can all my hope my pride my joyS
With earth and sky take wing and flyR
-
Can that for which I've daily borneT
With insult empty scoff and scornT
For which I've labour'd still to earnU
'Till Life itself's a burden grownC
Can that one day from me be flownC
-
Can that for which I've inly bledV
And tears of blood not water shedV
For which I've lain on thorny bedV
Who else had lain on bed of downW
Can that one day from me be flownC
-
Can that for which I've wooed disgraceX
Look'd Persecution in the faceX
For which I've barter'd pelf and placeX
And donn'd instead the martyr's crownW
Can that one day from me be flownC
-
What can the all my soul held dearG
The soul itself and all whate'erA
Comprised in this Great UniverseY
Take wing and never more returnU
Can Life itself thus prove a curseY
And mock the mighty souls who yearnU
Even to obtain the life superneU
Sung in prophetic verseY
-
Forbid it Truth 'It is forbid '-
Rang in my soul as voice e'er didZ
A voice whose tone the quester chidZ
'It is forbid On facts aloneU
From battle with externals wonU
The common understanding mayA2
Persist another thing to sayA2
But whose looks Life's surface underA
The Veil of Isis seeks to sunderA
And on internals cares to ponderA
Even such a one will find whate'erA
Has been will be tho' Earth's rude sphereG
To outer sense should disappearG
Tho' to that sense above belowD
All things appear to come and goD
Yet to the inner living stillB2
With dread to chill with bliss to thrillB2
To warn encourage pain or charmC2
To lead to blessedness or harmC2
To whip or bless us for the actZ
Another's heart has soothed or rackedZ
Yea all things and all deeds whateverA
Shall to the inner sense remainU
Shall constitute a fountain everA
Of what should nerve for high endeavourA
Of what once drank should heart and brainU
So fire that Man would rue ab neverA
That he was born tho' born to painU
Thy cry is not in vain '-
