Rhyme Scheme: ABCB DEDE FGFG CHCH

Mother wept and father sigh dA
With delight a glowB
Cried the lad To morrow criedC
To the pit I goB
-
Up and down the place he spedD
Greeted old and youngE
Far and wide the tidings spreadD
Clapp d his hands and sungE
-
Came his cronies some to gazeF
Rapt in wonder someG
Free with counsel some with praiseF
Some with envy dumbG
-
May he many a gossip criedC
Be from peril keptH
Father hid his face and sighedC
Mother turned and weptH
