AT Backworth sung till echo rungA
A bard whose feelings wereB
In what to young and old he sungA
Of little Dolly DareC
-
'Tho' Lizzy's sweet and Polly's neatD
And Fanny she is fairC
There's truly none was never oneE
So blithe as Dolly DareC
-
In doors and out she stirs aboutF
As if she felt awareC
By labour glows more red the roseG
That dowereth Dolly DareC
-
A duty here with forehead clearH
With grace a duty thereC
She'll do and do what very fewI
Can do will Dolly DareC
-
She knitting will a ditty trillJ
And to an olden airC
The needles bright dance left and rightK
Of sweet tongued Dolly DareC
-
Beneath her touch its power is suchL
As bright as palace rareC
The cottage seems and in it gleamsM
A Queen in Dolly DareC
-
The pots and mugs and pans and jugsN
Into their places fareC
And clearer glow and dearer growO
When touched by Dolly DareC
-
The bread she bakes the beds she makesP
And up and down the stairC
On tripping toe will dancing goO
The tidy Dolly DareC
-
To words of mirth she scours the hearthQ
While in his easy chairC
Old Robin lies and smoking eyesR
With pride his Dolly DareC
-
Her pail to fill she'll to the rillJ
Or to the well and thereC
Doth clearly see Truth's self for sheS
Therein sees Dolly DareC
-
Tis thus away she'll while the dayT
And then to me repairC
When envy smit the moments flitU
O'er me and Dolly Dare '-
-
The bard his song so sung and longV
Tho' plain his verses wereB
Wagged every tongue with what he sungA
Of little Dolly DareC
