WHY thus mourn o'er star hopes fadedA
They are only from thy kenB
By a passing vapour shadedC
And will soon appear againB
Up and guard thee like a warriorD
Up and make the present thineE
Trust me every doubt's a barrierD
To Life's heritage divineE
-
See yon kingly soul attendedA
By the dulcet tones of loveF
An immortal here descendedA
But to lift our eyes aboveF
Dark as be thy lot and cruelG
He has known as dire a woeH
Bright as be his prize a jewelG
Brighter still for thee may glowH
-
Not the Cytherean trulyI
Vain its pursuit and unwiseJ
But the joy Uranian dulyI
Seek we that and rich the prizeJ
But for that be our endeavourD
And afar our doubt and fearK
We shall then be losers neverD
Tho' but losers we appearK
-
Lose we may the husk and perishL
What the outer senses prizeJ
But no real joy we cherishL
Ever from us fades or fliesJ
Hid it may be from the spiritM
Only for awhile 'tis hidC
And one day will meed our meritM
With a joy to sense forbidC
-
From our bosom the infernalG
All that's mean and low and baseN
Every wish and longing carnalG
Chase we then or seek to chaseN
Clearer to us then and clearerD
Would Life's complex riddle seemO
And our Edens fled prove nearerD
Than at present we may deemO
-
He the lord of his own passionsP
Peers the monarch ne'er so boldQ
For his loins a girdle fashionsP
Richer than a girth of goldQ
Not a thorn can pierce his bosomR
But before the pang has flownS
But becometh a bright blossomR
His right royal head to crownT
-
'Valour's born from self denialG
Wisdom from each stern rebukeU
Power from every pain and trialG
That the human soul may brook '-
Sagest heroes heroic sagesV
So have taught since Time beganW
Up then earn a hero's wagesX
Up then up and be a manW
-
Up and lo to hail thee victorD
Smiles will leap from every brookY
Beauty will herself impictureD
On whatever thou mayst lookY
Stars the blessed stars my brotherD
Will attend thee in the nightZ
And Creation's self be otherD
Than it seems to common sightZ
