Rhyme Scheme: ABBA CDEC FGGF HBBH IJJI BKKB LMML NOONPerfection ever is the price of toil | A |
Of marchings long and hardships by the way | B |
Of burdens borne oft in the heat of day | B |
'Tis then as right the victor claims the spoil | A |
- | |
The world admires the wreath upon his brow | C |
But he alone can tell how much it cost | D |
And how to gain it he had all things lost | E |
Results men see but not the when or how | C |
- | |
The stately elm which rears its head so high | F |
And spreads abroad so gracefully its boughs | G |
Beneath which may repose a herd of cows | G |
Grows under ground as well as toward the sky | F |
- | |
The bridge which spans the swiftly flowing stream | H |
O'er which the iron horse by night and day | B |
With heavy tread speeds on its busy way | B |
Rests not on sand nor slender post and beam | H |
- | |
Below the shifting sand on solid rock | I |
The mason safely laid the buttress stone | J |
And labored long before his work was shown | J |
But he built well his work endures each shock | I |
- | |
This work takes time we chafe at the delay | B |
And try to gain the summit at a bound | K |
But find full soon our hopes dashed to the ground | K |
Yet there remains for all the royal way | B |
- | |
And he who would true eminence attain | L |
Must heed the word of Him who came to serve | M |
Nor from this path a single moment swerve | M |
If he the great reward would surely gain | L |
- | |
This is the royal way to serve in love | N |
Servant to servants ever aim to be | O |
Like Him who gave His life to ransom thee | O |
Then shalt thou sit with Him on throne above | N |
