The Moss Rose Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD EFEFGHGH IJIJKLKL MNMNOHOH PQPRSTST

'Tis said long since an angel came to earthA
Sent by his Lord to help with loving handB
A suffering one afflicted from his birthA
The limb was healed as by divine commandB
But He felt weak for strength from Him had goneC
A sacrifice which love could not withholdD
So he sought shelter till the morning dawnC
But none received they prized not love but goldD
-
Then 'neath a rose bush did the angel lieE
And rested well until the break of dayF
When much refreshed he sought his home on highE
But ere he started on his upward wayF
He said to sheltering rose in loving voiceG
What man refused thou hast afforded meH
What is thy wish Make known to me thy choiceG
The God of love and power will grant it theeH
-
I ask no brighter hue the rose repliedI
Both old and young smile on me as they passJ
My buds adorn the bosom of the brideI
And hide among the locks of lovely lassJ
With fragrance too I own myself contentK
For naught on earth surpasses me in thisL
But if indeed my Maker thee has sentK
I ask but this to consummate my blissL
-
I feel the cold both in my bark and budM
When Autumn winds sweep o'er the western hillN
And frozen dewdrops oft my branches studM
Which mar my beauty and my juices chillN
Give me an extra garb 'tis all I lackO
Thou hast thy wish I shelter found in theeH
I take delight in kind to pay thee backO
Let softest moss thy extra garment beH
-
Then touched the angel bark and bud and leafP
And soft green moss suffused it o'er and o'erQ
He lingered near it for a moment briefP
Plucked off a bud which he to heaven boreR
And now the rose smiles at the raging stormS
Defies the wind and nipping frost as wellT
Its fragrance still retains and lovely formS
While nestling budlets this old story tellT
