The Clouds Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCC DDEE CCFF BAGG HHII JJKK LLGG MMNN OOPP

A grand stairway do these clouds appearA
As they heavenward rise tier upon tierB
With clearly marked space of blue betweenC
Compared with which human art looks meanC
-
Do the angels tread this grand staircaseD
When they come to earth to bless our raceD
And lend their aid to each struggling soulE
As he ascends toward the heavenly goalE
-
Was this the ladder by Jacob seenC
That reached from heaven to the mattress greenC
On which he lay all the lonely nightF
Till God afforded the blessed sightF
-
And made him feel tho' an exile hereB
His father's God would be ever nearA
The servant's cry would to heaven ariseG
And blessings fall from the bending skiesG
-
But no staircase do the angels needH
They come to earth at a greater speedH
Not step by step nor on eagle's wingI
Nor beams of light do their message bringI
-
Though heaven be far beyond mortal kenJ
Assisted by all the arts of menJ
A moment's time and the space is passedK
And heaven's best gifts at our feet are castK
-
Not a cloud stairway nor ladder longL
Connects this earth with the land of songL
The Saviour bends from the opening skiesG
He smiles in love and our souls ariseG
-
As flakes of steel to the magnet flyM
And mists ascend to the sun on highM
So we are drawn by the cords of loveN
From the earth below to thrones aboveN
-
O lift me up from my bed of clayO
To dwell with Thee in the realms of dayO
If 'tis Thy will I should tarry stillP
Prepare me Lord for Thy Holy HillP
