A Prize Birthday PoemA
-
-
We do not sing of vast domainB
Empires as vast as ours are seenC
And o'er their millions despots reignB
We sing the virtues of our QueenC
-
We think of her when but a maidD
The message came the King is deadE
And at her feet a crown was laidD
In deep distress of mind she saidE
-
In my behalf I ask your prayersF
Then falling on her knees to prayG
She told the Lord her fears and caresF
And sought from Him strength for her dayG
-
He seemed to say Child do not fearH
I will uphold thee with my handI
And I will make thy pathway clearH
Thy throne establish in the landI
-
'Twas thus began Victoria's reignB
And God has made her throne secureJ
Her enemies will plot in vainB
For it is destined to endureJ
-
But while she sits on regal throneK
And acts full well a regal partL
She reigns not on the throne aloneK
She reigns to day in England's heartL
-
Her queenly heart with pity throbsF
For every suffering subject's woesF
In lowly cot 'midst groans and sobsF
She like a ray of sunshine goesF
-
As sweet perfume by outward galeM
Is carried far o'er sea and landI
So queenly virtues never failM
To touch true hearts on every strandI
-
In every land her name is blestN
She is beloved by old and youngO
From pole to pole from east to westN
The song God save the Queen is sungO
-
Through sorrows deep her path has ledE
And tender ties have sundered beenP
Bright hopes were buried with her deadE
And love has kept their memory greenC
-
By grief secluded from the worldQ
Her path through lonely years she trodR
And oft her life has been imperilledR
But she has leaned upon her GodR
-
And as she wept a nation's tearsF
In heartfelt sympathy were shedR
Forgetting their own griefs and biersF
They wept beside the royal deadR
-
With grateful hearts her natal dayR
We loyal Britons hail againS
And join with millions as they prayR
God bless our Queen Long may she reignB
-
And when at last life's glories fadeR
And robes of state are laid asideR
When nature's debt to dust is paidR
And charms no more earth's pomp and prideR
-
May angel bands her spirit bearT
Up to the palace of her KingU
Where she a fadeless crown shall wearT
And the new song with rapture singU
