Others Save With Fear Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDD EEFFGGHH IIJJKKLM NNOOMMPP QQRRSSMM GTUUVVWW XXYYZZA2A2 MMB2B2B2B2C2C2Some men there are who stand so straight | A |
So equipoised that others' fate | A |
Seems to depend on their behest | B |
And useless all our every quest | B |
To gain perfection or renown | C |
Unless we touch the flowing gown | C |
Of these high priests whose shadows fall | D |
Within themselves if fall at all | D |
- | |
Others are not as straight as these | E |
But more like rough and gnarled trees | E |
But little beauty they display | F |
Shadows they cast across the way | F |
And from them men with scorning turn | G |
Or if they speak their accents burn | G |
Like capsicum on chafed skin | H |
And leave a smarting wound within | H |
- | |
Once noble men when turned aside | I |
By fleshly lust or sinful pride | I |
Each one becomes a broken bell | J |
On which the angry fiends of hell | J |
Ring out their discord harsh and loud | K |
As if with demon powers endowed | K |
Colossal once through grace they were | L |
Colossal still though cleft and bare | M |
- | |
On northern rocks is often seen | N |
The impress of some southern sheen | N |
The brightness of a warmer bloom | O |
Unknown to winter's frost and gloom | O |
The fossil flower of epoch fair | M |
Has left its lasting impress there | M |
So in some men whose hearts are cold | P |
You find a trace of days of old | P |
- | |
While we deplore the Arctic chill | Q |
The frigid heart the ice bound will | Q |
We must admire the fossil trace | R |
Still seen of early days of grace | R |
Hiding from sight as best we can | S |
The traces of the fallen man | S |
We feast our eyes upon the fair | M |
Though fossil lines that linger there | M |
- | |
How to restore is our concern | G |
As we o'er their declensions mourn | T |
Can such dire ruin be repaired | U |
Only if God's strong arm be bared | U |
But we must do a brother's part | V |
And try to thaw the frozen heart | V |
Not by the fire of wrath above | W |
But by the melting coals of love | W |
- | |
As bullets smooth are farther shot | X |
Because rough angles they have not | X |
So gentle ways and loving speech | Y |
Are sure the erring heart to reach | Y |
While jagged deeds and words unkind | Z |
Like pebbles rough much friction find | Z |
They fall before they reach the goal | A2 |
And seldom help the needy soul | A2 |
- | |
To truth be loyal but take a care | M |
That with true zeal tact have a share | M |
The lightning when it strikes the tree | B2 |
Runs with the grain as oft you see | B2 |
Those who at angling are adepts | B2 |
Choose well their bait and guard their steps | B2 |
So if you would the sinner gain | C2 |
Bait well your hook or mark the grain | C2 |
