My Sister Nell And I Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF DGDG HIHI JKJK LMLM JNJN OPOP LQLQWe strolled down by the river side | A |
My sister Nell and I | B |
To watch the waters onward glide | A |
And vessels passing by | B |
- | |
On Nature's floor of lovely green | C |
Bedecked with flowers of gold | D |
The purple sassafras as sheen | C |
Which trumpet vines enfold | D |
- | |
We played our youthful games for hours | E |
And told our childish tales | F |
Adorned each brow with fragrant flowers | E |
And slept 'neath cooling gales | F |
- | |
For I was then but nine years old | D |
And she was only seven | G |
Yet joys like ours can ne'er be told | D |
They savored much of heaven | G |
- | |
Close by the bank in shady nooks | H |
The waxen lilies grew | I |
We called them fish and with our hooks | H |
To shore full many drew | I |
- | |
With these I made a wreath for Nell | J |
She was so good and pure | K |
They seemed to suit her brow so well | J |
Yet could not long endure | K |
- | |
The heated brow and dewless air | L |
The river suits them best | M |
But graced awhile her golden hair | L |
As dove would silken nest | M |
- | |
Frail like the lilies too was Nell | J |
The fever's scorching blast | N |
Swept by and my fair flowerette fell | J |
And to the dust was cast | N |
- | |
But now she blooms in glory land | O |
Close by the tree of Life | P |
Better to bloom at God's right hand | O |
Than in this world of strife | P |
- | |
I hope some day to meet her there | L |
And as in days of yore | Q |
We plucked the lilies pure and fair | L |
Up there we'll gather more | Q |
