| Beneath their quilt of snow | B |
| How they can breathe I cannot tell | A |
| Nor how their rootlets grow | B |
| But soon the snow will melt away | C |
| And April showers descend | D |
| Then shall appear in colors gay | C |
| Each little pansy friend | D |

| Of pride it may not show a trace | E |
| Of lowly mind alway | C |
| But will not blush to show its face | E |
| All through the lifelong day | C |
| Its fragrance other flowers surpass | F |
| In form more stately too | G |
| But when you see my pets in mass | F |
| Thank God they ever grew | G |

| Or show a heart of guile | I |
| My pansy pets as you look down | H |
| Will look at you and smile | I |
| Nor will they murmur if you should | J |
| Pluck off their brightest bloom | K |
