Men Below Deck Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCBCB DADAAEAE FAFAGEGE HIHIJEKE

The battleship its anchor weighsA
And belches forth its thunderB
Its commodore all classes praiseA
And at his victories wonderB
And well they may for braver manC
Ne'er wielded sword or sabreB
But tell me brother if you canC
Who did the lowly laborB
-
Below the deck in engine roomD
As oilers and coal heaversA
Amidst the smut and ghastly gloomD
Who worked the iron leversA
And thus it is in other linesA
Brave men are often hiddenE
Below the deck in shops and minesA
To higher plane unbiddenE
-
The men on deck the praise receiveF
But meagre thanks the othersA
As honest men they seldom grieveF
And envy not their brothersA
A common cause they gladly serveG
Though in a lowly stationE
From path of duty never swerveG
Loyal to God and nationE
-
For when the smoke has cleared awayH
And din of battle endedI
On upper deck in bright arrayH
By angel bands attendedI
The whole ship's crew will then appearJ
From high and lowly stationE
And each the words well done shall hearK
'Midst shouts of acclamationE
