Thank God we have kept the flag floating General WhiteA
-
-
Some men like French display much dashB
They boldly rush upon the foeC
Their sword blades like the lightning flashB
As they on helm or hauberk clashB
Nor fear the foeman's blowC
We praise them for their gallant deedsD
They are the men the Empire needsD
-
But true as they are those who standE
Within the fort beleaguered roundF
Resources few at their commandE
Their army but a feeble bandE
Yet bravely hold their groundF
And o'er their blood bespattered coatsG
The Union Jack in triumph floatsG
-
Reduced their strength through lack of foodH
And fever germs on vitals preyedI
Yet they o'er trouble did not broodH
By night or day of cheerful moodH
This burden on them weighedI
To keep the flag afloat in briefJ
Till Buller came to their reliefJ
-
Brave White accept our meed of praiseK
We crown thee equal to the bestL
Of heroes of the olden daysK
Whose deeds inspired the poets' laysK
We need no further questL
But this with gratitude we noteM
Thy valour kept the flag afloatM
-
Valor like thine does not surpriseN
When we review thy noble pastO
A hero is the one who triesN
Though he may not to ideal riseN
His plan may fail at lastO
Yet is too brave to lay the blameP
On others but takes all the shameP
-
The fault was mine thy language thenQ
Revealing the divinest graceR
Possessed by truly noble menQ
And prophecy of triumph whenQ
With foe brought face to faceR
The choice remains defeat or deathS
The flag will float till latest breathS
