Beneath the surface of a shallow lakeA
Where grasses rank and mammoth rushes growB
And playful fish their bright fins nimbly shakeA
Or madly chase each other to and froB
The larva of the dragon fly submergedC
In family large had taken their abodeD
And tho' the waves around them daily surgedC
Upon the bending grass they safely rodeD
-
Content were they with life as there enjoyedE
To brighter world they never had aspiredF
Had they not felt unfilled an aching voidE
And heard a whisper of a life attiredF
In sapphire robes 'midst gleams of golden lightG
Above their present world so dank and chillH
Where all day long they wing their happy flightG
From roses sweet to lovely daffodilH
-
But some essayed to doubt if it were soB
Who ever had returned to make it knownI
One volunteered that he would upward goB
To bring report but he was not full grownI
And fainted when he reached the surface airJ
And falling round a reed his form he curledK
Then cried Delusion I have been up thereJ
And could not find a trace of brighter worldK
-
Yet others could not still the voice withinL
Nor disregard tradition's hopeful taleM
They called a council but it caused some dinL
And all their efforts seemed at first to failM
Till one wise head suggested this compactN
Expressed no doubt in dragon larva loreO
That if that brighter life were actual factN
And all who rose in golden sunshine soarO
-
Each must return to tell the joyful taleM
And o'er the waters shake his sapphire wingsP
So all may see and their bright comrade hailM
And talk about the tidings which he bringsP
Now each returns clad in his bright arrayQ
Skims o'er the grassy lake with gauze like wingsP
Attracts their notice by his plumage gayQ
And they collect to hear the news he bringsP
-
Then holding fast he buzzes out his songR
And seeks to woo them to a brighter worldK
And he succeeds for see the larva strongR
Climb up the grass and soon in light enfurledK
They wait the growth of wings then burst their shellsS
Shake loose the gauzy folds and soar awayQ
But soon come back again their joy to tellT
And help their brothers to a brighter dayQ
-
Perhaps our loved ones do not always stayQ
In far off heaven and leave their comrades loneI
Tho' yet unseen may hover round our wayQ
And see our toil and hear our daily moanI
And tho' we cannot see their lovely formsU
Nor hear full well the whispers of their voiceV
May shield us oft in life's tempestuous stormsU
And when we victories gain with us rejoiceV
-
They whisper thoughts perhaps if not word soundsW
And help to waken longings for our restK
And thus allure our hearts beyond earth's boundsW
To joy and home upon our Saviour's breastK
-
O may I heed the whispers which they bringX
And seek the grace which will my heart prepareJ
To climb from earth and take on angel wingX
Then soar aloft to find my home up thereJ
