Invocation Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCC DEDFGG HIHIJJ KLMLNN OPOPQQ RSRSTT

O Thou who art the source of joy and lightA
The great Revealer of the will DivineB
Thyself Divine all nature owns Thy mightA
And bows in homage at a beck of ThineB
Afford me light to guide my unskilled handC
And by Thy Spirit all my thoughts commandC
-
To Thy great name I dedicate my powersD
Yielding to Thee what Thou with blood hast boughtE
Resolved that Thou shalt have my days and hoursD
And for Thy sake shall every work be wroughtF
O deign to use me if it be Thy willG
And my poor heart with love and gladness fillG
-
If this strange impulse which I feel withinH
To write this book proceeds O Lord from TheeI
Let it not die nor be defiled by sinH
But let the work from self and sin be freeI
And prove a guide to home and bliss aboveJ
And help to fill this warring world with loveJ
-
The Master's touch I know it sadly lacksK
And may not please the nice artistic tasteL
Of some fine mind that naught but gold attractsM
Some may not count these iron filings wasteL
Like magnets to which gold will not adhereN
May they find ore in this to bless and cheerN
-
In this plain pitcher Lord Thy blessing pourO
That from it men their raging thirst may slakeP
And when exhausted is the scanty storeO
Then let the earthen vessel quickly breakP
Its end is gained if Thou art glorifiedQ
And men have learned to love the Christ who diedQ
-
As flowers drink in the solar rays and dewR
And in return give bloom and odors sweetS
So would I to Thy Spirit's touch prove trueR
And render that return which seemeth meetS
Come dews of grace Great Sun illume my heartT
That I to some sad soul may joy impartT
