When the French soldier from the field returnedA
Begrimed with smoke and blood he felt contentB
As from Napoleon he this fact had learnedA
That thro' his marshall medals would be sentB
The name of battlefield each one would bearC
And also in large letters I was thereC
-
In others' triumphs we may well rejoiceD
If in their triumphs good to us redoundsD
But in the glory we can have no choiceD
And our rejoicings are but empty soundsD
If you would in the victor's glory shareC
Be then prepared to add this I was thereC
-
The victor's joy belongs to him aloneE
He stood his ground 'midst storms of shot and shellF
Thro' his brave stand the foe has been o'erthrownE
And he alone the victor's tale can tellF
He now lies down to die 'neath glory's glareC
For he can say to others I was thereC
-
Not in some neutral nook must we remainE
The battle rages we must share the strifeG
The world once lost we must for Christ regainE
And each lay hold upon eternal lifeG
Who share His conflicts will His glory shareC
Then looking down to earth say I was thereC
-
Those who before the throne are robed in whiteH
Passed thro' the conflict and the foe o'ercameI
Boldly they stood as champions for the rightH
And thus have won thro' grace enduring fameI
And when the roll is called each will declareC
Here am I Lord I fought for Thee down thereC
