I Was There Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABABCC DDDDCC EFEFCC EGEGCC HIHICCWhen the French soldier from the field returned | A |
Begrimed with smoke and blood he felt content | B |
As from Napoleon he this fact had learned | A |
That thro' his marshall medals would be sent | B |
The name of battlefield each one would bear | C |
And also in large letters I was there | C |
- | |
In others' triumphs we may well rejoice | D |
If in their triumphs good to us redounds | D |
But in the glory we can have no choice | D |
And our rejoicings are but empty sounds | D |
If you would in the victor's glory share | C |
Be then prepared to add this I was there | C |
- | |
The victor's joy belongs to him alone | E |
He stood his ground 'midst storms of shot and shell | F |
Thro' his brave stand the foe has been o'erthrown | E |
And he alone the victor's tale can tell | F |
He now lies down to die 'neath glory's glare | C |
For he can say to others I was there | C |
- | |
Not in some neutral nook must we remain | E |
The battle rages we must share the strife | G |
The world once lost we must for Christ regain | E |
And each lay hold upon eternal life | G |
Who share His conflicts will His glory share | C |
Then looking down to earth say I was there | C |
- | |
Those who before the throne are robed in white | H |
Passed thro' the conflict and the foe o'ercame | I |
Boldly they stood as champions for the right | H |
And thus have won thro' grace enduring fame | I |
And when the roll is called each will declare | C |
Here am I Lord I fought for Thee down there | C |
