Hide Their Scars! Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD EFEGHIHI JEJEKFKF ELMLNENE

A painter high in worldy fameA
Was sought to reproduce by artB
A likeness of the man whose nameA
Sent darts of anguish through the heartB
Of mighty monarchs in his dayC
For he by arms subdued the worldD
Kingdoms and empires owned his swayC
And bowed beneath his flag unfurledD
-
But Alexander bore a scarE
Deep marked upon his royal browF
To paint him thus would greatly marE
The monarch's beauty as a sloughG
Would mar the beauty of a lawnH
Where queenly feet are wont to treadI
Or like the cloud at early dawnH
Which hides some glory 'neath its spreadI
-
To leave it out would not be trueJ
For Alexander bore the scarE
The painter this resolved to doJ
Which would be true yet would not marE
To paint the monarch's head reclinedK
With his fore finger on his browF
And thus much grace with art combinedK
Like ornament on vessel's prowF
-
The finger rested on the scarE
As if mere chance had placed it thereL
And hid from sight this fruit of warM
And left a likeness true and fairL
So let us try as best we canN
To cover o'er each ugly scarE
Upon the brow of mortal manN
So none may see it near nor farE
