Hide Their Scars! Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD EFEGHIHI JEJEKFKF ELMLNENEA painter high in worldy fame | A |
Was sought to reproduce by art | B |
A likeness of the man whose name | A |
Sent darts of anguish through the heart | B |
Of mighty monarchs in his day | C |
For he by arms subdued the world | D |
Kingdoms and empires owned his sway | C |
And bowed beneath his flag unfurled | D |
- | |
But Alexander bore a scar | E |
Deep marked upon his royal brow | F |
To paint him thus would greatly mar | E |
The monarch's beauty as a slough | G |
Would mar the beauty of a lawn | H |
Where queenly feet are wont to tread | I |
Or like the cloud at early dawn | H |
Which hides some glory 'neath its spread | I |
- | |
To leave it out would not be true | J |
For Alexander bore the scar | E |
The painter this resolved to do | J |
Which would be true yet would not mar | E |
To paint the monarch's head reclined | K |
With his fore finger on his brow | F |
And thus much grace with art combined | K |
Like ornament on vessel's prow | F |
- | |
The finger rested on the scar | E |
As if mere chance had placed it there | L |
And hid from sight this fruit of war | M |
And left a likeness true and fair | L |
So let us try as best we can | N |
To cover o'er each ugly scar | E |
Upon the brow of mortal man | N |
So none may see it near nor far | E |
