Tossed about in strange commotion | B |
Like the surface of the ocean | B |
When the wind its waters lashing | C |
Sends great billows roaring dashing | C |
O'er the breakers which for ages | D |
Have withstood the storms it wages | D |
See those clouds so like this ocean | B |
How they whirl in strange commotion | B |
- | |
Dust and vapor now are meeting | C |
Each the other wildly greeting | C |
As one hand another grasping | C |
So are these each other clasping | C |
Now they whirl in form fantastic | C |
And great trees with boughs elastic | C |
With loud moans are lowly bending | C |
Leaves and fruit to earth descending | C |
- | |
Eyes 'most blinded nerves all shaken | B |
By this fearful storm o'ertaken | B |
As it swept on toward the sunrise | E |
Yet I chanced to lift my dim eyes | E |
Upward when O sight entrancing | C |
I beheld to west advancing | C |
Other clouds in higher current | F |
Unlike earth's so wild and errant | F |
- | |
Far above the wild commotion | B |
Like great ships on peaceful ocean | B |
Floating westward grand and steady | G |
Were those clouds as if made ready | G |
As great cars with grand pavilions | H |
To convey the ransomed millions | H |
From this earth where storms are raging | C |
To that land of charms engaging | C |
- | |
Life on earth is a probation | B |
Storms fit well in this relation | B |
Yet above are peaceful regions | H |
Where ne'er come hell's dreaded legions | H |
Looking toward the things eternal | I |
We may rise to realms supernal | I |
Where earth's dust will not defile us | J |
Nor the cunning foe beguile us | J |
- | |
To this higher plain O lift me | G |
Gracious Lord ere Satan sift me | G |
Far above this noisy Babel | I |
Far above earth's clouds all sable | I |
Up so far no darts can reach me | G |
Where the Holy Ghost will teach me | G |
And in perfect peace abiding | C |
I will sing while heavenward riding | C |
