And men's hearts are sadly failing | B |
They do not hear the great Victor's shout | A |
But indulge in bitter wailing | B |
The old gives place to the new they say | C |
And fond hopes are daily buried | D |
Our cherished views are oft borne away | C |
As if by the tempest hurried | D |

The world is stirred to its very heart | E |
And the Church shares the commotion | F |
With systems old we are loathe to part | E |
To sail on an unknown ocean | F |
The world now heaves like the great sea's breast | G |
And rocks like an infant's cradle | H |
And looking up by sore grief oppressed | G |
We find the sky draped in sable | H |

I will not fear though the earth should rock | I |
If God's foot be on the cradle | H |
But rest in peace midst the tempest's shock | I |
Rejoicing that God is able | H |
To still the world with His mighty hand | J |
If His timid child should waken | F |
Or if it rock He will by me stand | J |
And my heart shall not be shaken | F |
