When presses hard my load of careA
And other friends from me departB
I want a friend my grief to shareA
With faithful speech and loving heartB
-
I want a friend of noble mindC
Who loves me more than praise or pelfD
Reproves my faults with spirit kindC
And thinks of me as well as selfD
-
A friend whose ear is ever closedE
Against traducers' poison breathF
And though in me be not disclosedE
An equal love yet loves till deathF
-
A friend who knows my weakness wellG
And ever seeks to calm my fearsH
If words should fail the storm to quellG
Will soothe my fevered heart with tearsI
-
A friend not moved by jealousyJ
Should I outrun him in life's raceK
And though I doubt still trusts in meJ
With loyal heart and cloudless faceK
-
True friendship knows both joy and griefD
The sweetest pleasure keenest painL
Its sharpest pangs are ever briefD
Mere flitting clouds before the rainL
-
But soon the joy returns againM
With bluer sky and brighter lightN
The grief proves but a narrow glenM
All full of flowers though hid from sightN
-
And e'en in darkness we inhaleO
The fragrant odors love emitsP
Friendship like this can never failO
On love's strong throne its monarch sitsP
-
True friendship is of greater worthQ
Than words though they were solid goldR
To all the glittering gems of earthQ
I it prefer a thousandfoldR
-
One Friend I have who knows my heartR
And loves me with a changeless loveD
I love Him too nor death can partR
Us two for we will love aboveD
-
A woman's love to His is faintR
No brother cleaves as close as HeJ
No seraph words could ever paintR
The love this Friend now bears to meJ
