England's Brave Sons Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABBA CDDC EFFE GHHG IJJI KLLK CDDC CMMC NHHN ODDO

The yeoman lays aside his soil stained smockA
And from his herd selects a trusty steedB
And sallies forth to help in hour of needB
Nor dreads the battle's shockA
-
The artisan from mine or shop or storeC
Responds at duty's call without delayD
Nor stops to ask What will my nation payD
It calls what needs he moreC
-
The man of law the herald of the crossE
The painter skilled he of the healing artF
The man of trade come each with loyal heartF
Nor calculates his lossE
-
But brave as these are those of noble birthG
Genteel in manner but with athlete framesH
They do full honor to their ancient namesH
And prove by deeds their worthG
-
Palatial homes have they and wealth untoldI
Nor need to labor and no cause for fretJ
But deeds of noble sires they ne'er forgetJ
Deem honor more than goldI
-
Brave lads are these on whom we may relyK
They go uncalled content the gaps to fillL
And in their places fall if God so willL
For they fear not to dieK
-
The whole Empire is loyal to the coreC
From far off East brave Indians seek the frayD
And on French soil have clearly shown that theyD
Were true to flag they boreC
-
Their old time leader greets his men once moreC
Bestows his parting blessing ere his deathM
And praised their valor with his final breathM
Then crossed to other shoreC
-
Our own brave youth by thousands answer callN
And in our common cause enroll their namesH
With cultured minds and well developed framesH
They stand like granite wallN
-
For truth and brotherhood all face the foeO
Themselves they cannot save but others mayD
But live or die they hope to win the dayD
To sacrifice they goO
