Dear Canada our native landA
Our love for thee grows day by dayB
Our fathers left the olden strandA
O'er sea and rapids made their wayB
And by their energy and skillC
They laid thy firm foundation deepD
And sowed the seed o'er vale and hillC
Which we their sons are called to reapD
-
The wilderness blooms as the roseE
The old time hardships are unknownF
And wealth in streams of commerce flowsE
From sea to sea a nation grownF
Still youthful but with thews of steelG
To throttle foes that may ariseH
Yet loving touch sore hearts to healG
And lift us nearer to the skiesH
-
We cannot boast as blue a skyI
As smiles o'er many an Alpine plainJ
Nor are our mountain peaks as highI
As theirs yet we have other gainJ
Our hills are rich in yellow goldK
Our plains are broad and fertile tooL
Our lakes and streams hold wealth untoldK
And grander forests never grewL
-
Our sky is bright to healthy eyesH
Pure ozone lades the air we breatheM
Our climate we have learned to prizeH
Nor do we o'er our winters grieveN
For nature throws her ermine robeO
O'er purple hills and vales as wellP
No portion of this earthly globeO
As gay as this with sleigh and bellP
-
But soon the winter wears awayB
And plants long sheltered now are seenQ
And April showers and smiling MayB
Soon clothe the earth in living greenQ
Monotony is thus unknownF
Each season is a glad surpriseH
In which God's truth and love are shownF
And hope within us never diesH
-
Our sons inured to noble toilR
Grow strong in arm and broad in mindS
Some stay at home to till the soilR
Others in various callings findS
Their missions but where'er their placeT
In the great drama of our dayB
They as a class win in the raceT
And the behests of Heaven obeyB
-
The gold of monarchy have weU
Without the useless silt and drossV
And like our cousins all are freeU
Yet we have no election bossW
No union here of Church and StateX
Yet Church and State full well agreeU
That nations never can be greatX
If they refuse to bow the kneeU
-
We make the nation's weal or woeY
As one may shape his future lifeZ
God's mill 'tis said grinds fine tho' slowY
A fact lost sight of in the strifeZ
For place and power in Church and StateX
And think God cares not what we doL
But to our doubt he whispers waitX
And time proves Him both just and trueL
-
From England and from sunny FranceA2
Our fathers came long years agoY
On Abraham's plain with sword and lanceA2
They fought as foes gave blow for blowY
The victors and the conquered nowB2
Recall that day with mutual prideC2
To their grand destiny all bowB2
And as true peers stand side by sideC2
-
So give me Canada beforeD2
The fairest land beneath the skyI
We stretch our arms from shore to shoreD2
And all are free both low and highI
An infant nation yet 'tis trueL
But strong in muscle and in nerveE2
We hold our own give all their dueL
And God's great purpose humbly serveE2
