Our love for thee grows day by day | B |
Our fathers left the olden strand | A |
O'er sea and rapids made their way | B |
And by their energy and skill | C |
They laid thy firm foundation deep | D |
And sowed the seed o'er vale and hill | C |
Which we their sons are called to reap | D |
- | |
The wilderness blooms as the rose | E |
The old time hardships are unknown | F |
And wealth in streams of commerce flows | E |
From sea to sea a nation grown | F |
Still youthful but with thews of steel | G |
To throttle foes that may arise | H |
Yet loving touch sore hearts to heal | G |
And lift us nearer to the skies | H |
- | |
We cannot boast as blue a sky | I |
As smiles o'er many an Alpine plain | J |
Nor are our mountain peaks as high | I |
As theirs yet we have other gain | J |
Our hills are rich in yellow gold | K |
Our plains are broad and fertile too | L |
Our lakes and streams hold wealth untold | K |
And grander forests never grew | L |
- | |
Our sky is bright to healthy eyes | H |
Pure ozone lades the air we breathe | M |
Our climate we have learned to prize | H |
Nor do we o'er our winters grieve | N |
For nature throws her ermine robe | O |
O'er purple hills and vales as well | P |
No portion of this earthly globe | O |
As gay as this with sleigh and bell | P |
- | |
But soon the winter wears away | B |
And plants long sheltered now are seen | Q |
And April showers and smiling May | B |
Soon clothe the earth in living green | Q |
Monotony is thus unknown | F |
Each season is a glad surprise | H |
In which God's truth and love are shown | F |
And hope within us never dies | H |
- | |
Our sons inured to noble toil | R |
Grow strong in arm and broad in mind | S |
Some stay at home to till the soil | R |
Others in various callings find | S |
Their missions but where'er their place | T |
In the great drama of our day | B |
They as a class win in the race | T |
And the behests of Heaven obey | B |
- | |
The gold of monarchy have we | U |
Without the useless silt and dross | V |
And like our cousins all are free | U |
Yet we have no election boss | W |
No union here of Church and State | X |
Yet Church and State full well agree | U |
That nations never can be great | X |
If they refuse to bow the knee | U |
- | |
We make the nation's weal or woe | Y |
As one may shape his future life | Z |
God's mill 'tis said grinds fine tho' slow | Y |
A fact lost sight of in the strife | Z |
For place and power in Church and State | X |
And think God cares not what we do | L |
But to our doubt he whispers wait | X |
And time proves Him both just and true | L |
- | |
From England and from sunny France | A2 |
Our fathers came long years ago | Y |
On Abraham's plain with sword and lance | A2 |
They fought as foes gave blow for blow | Y |
The victors and the conquered now | B2 |
Recall that day with mutual pride | C2 |
To their grand destiny all bow | B2 |
And as true peers stand side by side | C2 |
- | |
So give me Canada before | D2 |
The fairest land beneath the sky | I |
We stretch our arms from shore to shore | D2 |
And all are free both low and high | I |
An infant nation yet 'tis true | L |
But strong in muscle and in nerve | E2 |
We hold our own give all their due | L |
And God's great purpose humbly serve | E2 |
