Alaskan Boundary Settlement Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCC DDEFGG HHBBII JJKKLL MMNNDD CCOOPP

My neighbor's farm and mine lie side by sideA
And nothing should our mutual trust divideA
But they who made th' original surveyB
Were guided by the stars the records sayB
So that the line that marks out our domainC
Is indistinct and puzzling doubts remainC
-
Our farms are large and portions near the lineD
With rocky soil and stunted spruce and pineD
With scarce a wigwam or a ranger's hearthE
We left untilled and deemed of little worthF
The petals of this desert rose unfoldG
When man discovers mines of yellow goldG
-
Where is the boundary line is now the cryH
Each stakes his claim and gives his reason whyH
One sought an exit to the main highwayB
The other closed the gates and gained the dayB
In custom duties on the shining oreI
And stores for man and beast that inland pourI
-
Each claimed his own whatever that may beJ
Yet neighbors true we feared to disagreeJ
We studied maps and treaties old and newK
Yet each his own line fence declared was trueK
Then to avoid unseemly strife we choseL
To settle our dispute as friends not foesL
-
My neighbor chose three men in his employM
I three at least accepted them with joyM
Not chosen these to arbitrate our caseN
But from material at command to traceN
In harmony with law the primal lineD
For boundary fence between his farm and mineD
-
I lost my case all but one narrow laneC
All other gates are closed but why complainC
Diminished somewhat is my large estateO
But self respect remains nor place for hateO
O'er our line fence we grasp each other's handP
And for the right united ever standP
