Dark fossil flower I see thy leaves unrolledA
With all thy lines of beauty freshly markedA
As when the eye of Morn beamed on thee firstA
And thou first turn'dst to meet its welcome smileB
And sometimes in the coals' bright rain bow huesC
I dream I see the colors of thy primeD
And for a moment robe thy form againE
In splendor not its own Flower of the pastA
Now as I look on thee life's echoing treadA
Falls noiseless on my ear the present diesF
And o'er my soul the thoughts of distant timeD
In silent waves like billows from the seaG
Come roling on and on with ceaseless flowH
Innumerable Thou may'st have sprung unsownE
Into thy noon of life when first earth heardA
Its Maker's sovereign voice and laughing flowersI
Waved o'er the meadows hung on mountain cragsI
And nodded in the breeze on every hillJ
Thou may'st have bloomed unseen save by the starsI
That sang together o'er thy rosy birthK
And came at eve to watch thy folded restA
None may have sought thee on thy flagrant homeL
Save light voiced winds that round thy dwelling playedA
Or seemed to sigh as oft their winged hasteA
Compelled their feet to roam Thou may'st have livedA
Beneath the light of later days when manE
With feet free roving as the homeless windA
Sealed the thick mantled height coursed plains unshornE
Breaking the solitude of nature's hauntA
With voice that seemed to blend in one sweet strainE
The mingled music of the elementsI
And when against his infant frame they roseI
Uncurbed unawed by his yet feeble handA
And when the muttering storm and shouting waveM
And rattling thunder mated round him ragedA
And seemed at times like d mon foes to girdA
Thou may'st have won with gentle look his heartA
And stirred the first warm prayer of gratitudeA
And been his first his simplest altar giftA
For thee dark flower the kindling sun can bringN
No more the colors that it gave nor mornE
With kindly kiss restore thy breathing sweetsI
Yet may the mind's mysterious touch recallO
The bloom and fragrance of thy early primeD
For HE who to the lowly lily gaveM
A glory richer than to proudest kingN
He painted not those darkly shining leavesI
With blushes like the dawn in vain nor gaveM
To thee its sweetly scented breath to wasteA
Upon the barren air E'en though thou stoodA
Alone in nature's forest home untrodA
The first love of the stars and sighing windsI
The mineral holds with faithful trust thy formP
To wake in human hearts sweet thoughts of loveQ
Now the dark past hangs round thy memoryG
