The Old Road Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GHGH IAJA

THE ROAD is left that once was trodA
By man and heavy laden beastB
And new ways opened iron shodA
That bind the land from west to eastB
-
I asked of Him who all things knowsC
Why none who lived now passed that wayD
Where rose the dust the grass now growsC
A still low voice was heard to sayD
-
Thou knowest not why I change the courseE
Of him who travels learn to goF
Obey the Spirit s gentle forceE
Nor ask thou where the stream may flowF
-
Man shall not walk in his own waysG
For he is blind and cannot seeH
But let him trust and lengthened daysG
Shall lead his feet to heaven and MeH
-
Then shall the grass the path grow o erI
That his own wilfulness has trodA
And man nor beast shall pass it moreJ
But he shall walk with Me his GodA
