| The air is tainted with the noisome breath | A |
| The wind from off the field of slaughter brings | B |
| Alas no mourners weep them for the slain | C |
| But all unburied lies the naked soul | D |
| The whitening bones of thousands strew the plain | C |
| Yet none can now the pestilence control | D |
| The eagles gathering on the carcase feed | E |
| In every heart behold their half formed prey | F |
| The battened wills beneath their talons bleed | E |
| Their iron beaks without remorse must slay | F |
| Till by the sun no more the place is seen | G |
| Where they who worshipped idol gods have been | H |
