Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFGF HIHI JKKKThe house my earthly parent left | A |
My heavenly parent still throws down | B |
For 'tis of air and sun bereft | A |
Nor stars its roof with beauty crown | B |
- | |
He gave it me yet gave it not | C |
As one whose gifts are wise and good | D |
'Twas but a poor and clay built cot | C |
And for a time the storms withstood | D |
- | |
But lengthening years and frequent rain | E |
O'ercame its strength it tottered fell | F |
And left me homeless here again | G |
And where to go I could not tell | F |
- | |
But soon the light and open air | H |
Received me as a wandering child | I |
And I soon thought their house more fair | H |
And all my grief their love beguiled | I |
- | |
Mine was the grove the pleasant field | J |
Where dwelt the flowers I daily trod | K |
And there beside them too I kneeled | K |
And called their friend my friend and God | K |
